Parent Focus: Four Ways Benefits Support Work

NC Medicaid Covers People With Disabilities Who Work

These rules mean your child can keep getting NC Medicaid even while making a lot of money at work:

  • If your child gets Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits while working, NC Medicaid will continue automatically.
  • If your child used to get SSI benefits, but now makes enough money that their SSI payment goes down to zero, SSI's 1619(b) rule means NC Medicaid will continue automatically even if your child makes up to $46,540 per year.
  • If your child has NC Medicaid, but then they make enough money at work that their resources or income are more than the NC Medicaid limits, they can keep their NC Medicaid coverage through Health Coverage for Workers with Disabilities (HCWD):
    • There is no limit on how much earned income your child can have! That means they can make any amount of money at work and still get NC Medicaid.
    • They must have unearned income at or below $1,956 per month.
    • Depending on their income, they may have to pay a small annual fee and a monthly premium for coverage.

If your child doesn't qualify for any of those options, they can get private health coverage through work or on HealthCare.gov. Private insurance companies cannot deny coverage to your child.

The bottom line

Your child can get health coverage after getting a job.
